Trees under threat from disease

London: The study of more than 600 types of conifers, which include cedars and firs, has found more than one-third of all species are at risk of extinction due to diseases, logging, pollution and climate change.

A report compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature updated a ''Red List'' on which almost 21,000 of 70,000 species of animals and plants are assessed as under threat.

The widely planted Monterey pine is now rated endangered.
