Australia has made its mark on the world stage, successfully passing the first Security Council resolution on small arms and light weapons.

Members states applauded the Australian government, represented by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, for highlighting the issue of the proliferation and use of small arms, and its "hard work" and  relentless pursuit of a devastating global problem that has not been addressed by the UN in four years.

"Thank you Madame president for choosing the issue of small arms for the month of your presidency," said France's Minister for Foreign Affairs, a sentiment echoed by the member states.

Ms Bishop, as president of the historic meeting for the month of September, nodded politely as she made her world debut at the UN Security Council today.

The two-hour meeting opened with Ms Bishop condemning the recent attack in Nairobi, and then moving on to a vote on the small arms and light weapons resolution.

Fourteen states were in favour, Russia refrained from voting and there were no votes against.

The meeting continues.
